The National Kiwi Hatchery, for your party alone

This is a full private Day Journey from Auckland, built around two experiences that exist nowhere else in this combination.

In the morning, exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the National Kiwi Hatchery, the world’s largest kiwi conservation facility, places your party inside one of New Zealand’s most important wildlife recovery programmes. No shared group. No strangers. The hatchery, for your party alone.

In the afternoon, Wai Ariki brings you into a world-class geothermal wellness sanctuary on the shores of Lake Rotorua, rooted in Ngāti Whakaue tradition and the volcanic landscape that surrounds it. Your party moves through a two-hour, seven-stage Restorative Journey unlike anything else in the world.

This day moves through two kinds of restoration. One for a species. One for a person. Both rooted in the same volcanic landscape of Rotorua.

Exclusive private access to the world's largest kiwi conservation facility

Inside the hatchery. Your party only.

Kiwi are disappearing. Without active intervention, experts estimate brown kiwi will be extinct in the wild within two generations. The National Kiwi Hatchery exists to stop that — and your visit puts you inside that work, not outside it.

Your exclusive behind-the-scenes experience takes your party into staff-only areas of the facility: the incubation rooms where eggs are monitored around the clock, the hatchery floor where chicks emerge, and the rearing areas where young kiwi are raised until they reach the predator-proof weight needed to survive in the wild. Your Kiwi Keeper guide explains the science, the process, and what it actually takes to lift a species back from the edge.

No public group joins you. No shared timing. This is the hatchery at its most direct — experienced privately, at your pace, with full access.

Geothermal restoration at Wai Ariki

Seven stages. Two hours. Nothing else like it in the world.

After the hatchery, the day shifts from conservation to restoration.

Wai Ariki’s Restorative Journey is a two-hour, seven-stage wellness experience rooted in Ngāti Whakaue tradition, the iwi whose ancestral connection to this geothermal landscape runs centuries deep.

The journey moves through blessing stone, waterfall showers, fire and ice caves, geothermal pools overlooking Lake Rotorua, mineral mud lounge, steam room, and a closing blessing. Each stage connects back to the same geothermal forces that shape the land above the lake.

Named one of the world’s top ten places to relax and rejuvenate and recognised globally for redefining luxury wellness through Te Ao Māori, Wai Ariki is the only experience of its kind in the world. Your party moves through each stage at its own pace, privately hosted throughout.

The morning was about restoring a species to the land it belongs in. The afternoon is about restoring the person who witnessed it. By the time you leave Wai Ariki, you will have felt those same forces in two entirely different ways.

Frequently asked questions

This Day Journey is designed for discerning adults who want one extraordinary private day that stands apart from the rest of their itinerary. It suits travellers who value depth over pace, genuine cultural connection over sightseeing, and private access over shared convenience. All Day Journeys are adults only. We do not offer child pricing. Families travelling together as adults are warmly welcome. Every journey is private to your party, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 guests.
Approximately 11.5 to 12 hours door-to-door from Auckland. You depart at approximately 8:30 AM and return around 8:15 PM.
Approximately three to three and a quarter hours each way, with time for a coffee or tea stop en route. The drive is not dead time. Within the first hour of leaving Auckland, the harbour city gives way to the Waikato plains, the terrain begins to shift, and the day starts to move toward Rotorua’s volcanic landscape. You travel privately throughout, with no shared vehicle, no fixed group pace, and no agenda beyond the day ahead.
Depending on your party size, you travel in a private Mercedes sedan, a seven-seat Mercedes luxury van, or a twelve-seat Mercedes van. All are private to your party throughout the day.
Whether you are a party of 2 or a party of 6, your vehicle, your guide, and the National Kiwi Hatchery experience are exclusively yours from departure to return. The Wai Ariki Restorative Journey runs in time-slotted sessions of no more than 16 guests — your party moves through each stage at their own pace, hosted throughout. For parties seeking complete exclusivity at Wai Ariki, a private session can be arranged. Ask us at the time of booking.
Your party enters staff-only areas of the facility with a dedicated Kiwi Keeper guide. This includes the incubation rooms, the hatchery floor, and the rearing areas where chicks are raised until they reach the predator-proof weight needed for release into the wild. You learn the science behind the programme, hear directly from the conservation team, and see kiwi recovery in action. No public group shares this access. It is the hatchery at its most direct.
Hatching season runs from September to March. Outside these months, newly hatched chicks and eggs are less likely to be present. The experience shifts its focus to the wider kiwi conservation and recovery programme, including the lifecycle, husbandry techniques, and ongoing care of young kiwi. Your party will also have the opportunity to observe a juvenile kiwi health check and see adult kiwi foraging in the nocturnal house. The conservation story is fully present year-round, and we will advise you on what to expect for your specific travel dates at the time of booking.
The Restorative Journey at Wai Ariki is a two-hour, seven-stage geothermal wellness experience rooted in Ngāti Whakaue tradition and Rotorua’s volcanic landscape. It moves through a blessing stone, waterfall showers, geothermal fire and ice caves, thermal pools overlooking Lake Rotorua, a mineral mud lounge, a steam room, and a closing blessing. You arrive at Wai Ariki after the hatchery, and the stillness, heat, and ritual of the experience bring the day to a deeply restorative close.
Neither experience is physically strenuous. The hatchery involves walking through the facility at a relaxed pace. The Restorative Journey is designed entirely for restoration. The day is calibrated for active adults who want depth of experience, not physical challenge.
A minimum of 21 to 30 days is required. Both the exclusive hatchery access and the Wai Ariki Restorative Journey require advance coordination to secure your party’s place at the standard this day deserves. The hatchery’s private behind-the-scenes experience can book out well in advance during peak season, so earlier booking is strongly recommended.
We would love to accommodate an earlier date for you. If you are already in New Zealand or your travel date is less than 21 days away, use "Check Availability" and tell us the exact date your party is available. We will review guide, vehicle, hatchery, and Wai Ariki availability and let you know what can be arranged.
