Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park, for your party alone

This is a full private day journey from Auckland, built around exclusive and private guided access to Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne, one of New Zealand’s oldest and most significant rainforests.

This ancient podocarp forest is opened to your party through a private arrangement with Nadine Toe Toe and the Toe Toe Whanau (family) of Ngāi Whare descent, the genuine custodians of this land and its stories. Your party has the forest, the guides, and the experience entirely to itself for the duration of your visit. No shared group. No strangers joining the day.

The travel, timing, pace, and experience flow are arranged around you, so the day unfolds completely from departure to return.

The walk and the meal are not two separate parts of the day. They are one continuous conversation, beginning among ancient trees and carrying on, uninterrupted, around a forest table.

Exclusive private access to one of Earth's last prehistoric rainforests

Dinosaur forest. Living knowledge. Your party only.

Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne is known globally as a dinosaur forest, one of the last remaining prehistoric podocarp forests on Earth, with a dense, towering canopy of ancient rimu, matai, and kahikatea unchanged since the era of the dinosaurs. It is not on the standard New Zealand itinerary. Most visitors never find it.

Your guide from the Toe Toe Whānau (family) of the Ngāi Whare tribe joins your vehicle at Murupara, beginning the experience with a Mihi Whakatau (traditional Māori welcome), the history of the land, and the stories of a people whose whakapapa (ancestry) is woven into this landscape.

Inside Whirinaki, your fully immersive cultural walk covers Rongoā (medicine), Rākau Rangatira (noble trees), native and endangered birds, and forest bathing, all through the living knowledge of custodians who belong to this place. At a point chosen by your guide, your party settles into a private picnic, wine, a cheeseboard, and hot kawakawa tea, before continuing the experience.

Your guide, your pace, and this depth of cultural access are exclusive to your party. The forest is a public conservation park. The experience is entirely yours.

Frequently asked questions

This day suits discerning adults seeking something quieter and more profound than a typical New Zealand sightseeing day. It is not visually dramatic in the way a volcano or a glacier is, but it is deeply meaningful, an intimate walk through ancient forest with genuine Māori custodians, followed by a private meal that continues the conversation rather than ending it. The pace is gentle and reflective throughout. This is not a physically demanding day. It is a culturally rich one.
Private means exactly that, your party only, from the moment you are picked up to the moment you return. Your vehicle is not shared with other guests. Your guide is dedicated entirely to your group. The experiences within your day are either exclusive to your party or reserved as a private time slot for your group alone. You will not share your day with strangers at any point.
Completely. Your vehicle, your guide, the forest walk, and the picnic are all exclusive to your party from departure to return. No other guests join you at any point.
Approximately 12.5 to 13 hours door-to-door from Auckland. Departure is around 7:00 AM, with return to Auckland by approximately 8:00 PM. Because the day is entirely private, with no fixed stops, no waiting on other travellers, and a pace shaped around your party throughout, the hours pass very differently than they would on a shared coach day. Rest, recline, or simply enjoy the drive. The day is yours to use as you choose.
Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne is one of the most remote and least visited rainforests in New Zealand, which is precisely why it remains so untouched. The drive there and back, through genuinely rural and scenic country, is part of what makes this day rare. You are not driving to reach a stop on everyone else’s itinerary, you are driving to reach a place almost no one else finds.
Depending on your party size, you travel in a private Mercedes sedan, a seven-seat Mercedes luxury van, or a twelve-seat Mercedes van. All are private to your party throughout the day.
Nadine Toe Toe and her whānau are Ngāi Whare, the genuine custodians of Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne. Their connection to this land is ancestral, not professional.
Your guide leads your party through Whirinaki at a relaxed, reflective pace, weaving traditional plant medicine knowledge, the stories of significant ancient trees, native birdlife, and quiet time among the trees into a single unhurried experience. At a point your guide chooses, the walk gives way to a private picnic in the forest itself, wine, cheeseboard, and hot kawakawa tea, with the conversation continuing rather than stopping for lunch.
The walk is gentle and unhurried, suited to active adults of any fitness level comfortable walking on natural forest terrain. This is not a strenuous day. The depth of the experience comes from what you encounter and learn, not physical exertion.
A minimum of 21 days. Nadine and the Toe Toe Whānau require advance coordination to secure your party's exclusive day. This lead time is what allows us to deliver the experience at the standard it deserves.
Possibly. If you are already in New Zealand or your travel date is less than 21 days away, use "Check Availability" and tell us the exact date your party is available. We will review availability and let you know what can be arranged.
